Sarek was a small baby when he came to us and never grew up even 18 years later. He always greeted everyone with a purr and a lick. As a companion in the habitat for Saavik, Sarek was a gentle giant and as meek as he could be. He was not a very active boy, and his gentleness and loving tempermant showed through with everyone.
At age 18 Sarek's health began to fail. Cougars in the wild typically live to the age of 10-12 when they can no longer hunt for themselves. While captivity doesn't allow free ranging, the continual supply of food and medical service tends to enable big cats to live longer. The phychological aspects of small enclosures, however, are particularly sad when these limits are placed on these great, big cats. Most "private" owners cannot provide ample space for adequate stimulation for these guys. This coupled with careless ownership makes these guys not good candidates for "pets" for the average person. Sarek was a gentle cat with a beautiful tempermant. Fortunately adequate facilities made it possible to experience this safely.
